3. Why Do You Need My Social Security Number and How Do You Protect It?

We collect social security numbers as necessary to support state and federal legal requirements, to provide products or services to you, and to meet our human resources needs. For example, providing your social security number will help you get our best rate in states where we are allowed to use your credit based insurance score to determine insurance rates. We restrict access to social security numbers to only those employees, agents, and subcontractors who need that information to support these purposes. We provide social security numbers to government agencies, as required by law. 4. Do You Share the Personal Information You Collect About Me Online?

Our affiliated companies that are listed below may share information about you with each other. We may also share your personal information with unaffiliated third parties. However, we do not disclose any information about our customers or former customers to anyone, except as permitted or required by law. These disclosures are generally described as:

  • Among our Group of Companies: We and our affiliates may share information about our current and former customers, including information that: identifies you; describes our transactions and experiences with you (such as your payment record, your prior insurance history, and claims history), and credit information that helps us determine your eligibility for insurance and payment plans. To provide you with improved service and inform you of product opportunities that may be available to you, the companies within our group may share such information about you among themselves. For example, some of our affiliated companies share or receive information to provide technical or operational support services - such as to prepare notices concerning your insurance policies or accounts with us or to provide data processing services. In addition, insurance policy information may be shared to assist in resolving a claim on your policy. Our affiliated companies may provide you information about other insurance products and non-insurance consumer products and financial services offered by them directly or through them acting as an agent on behalf of another organization.

  • Outside our Group of Companies: To rate your policies we may provide information about you to consumer reporting agencies and other data agencies such as those that provide credit information, claims history, motor vehicle records and vehicle history data. To better serve you, we sometimes contract with outside vendors who provide various services, such as printing and mail services, on our behalf. These third parties agree to safeguard and keep confidential our personal information about you and the products and services that you obtain from us. Those parties are required by law to restrict the use and disclosure of your personal information.

In addition, we may provide personal information about current and former customers to other third parties who have a legitimate need for the information. These may include, for example, insurance agents, third party claims adjusters and investigators, actuarial consultants, reinsurers, governmental agencies, courts, and law enforcement authorities. We may also provide personal information to insurance industry statistical reporting organizations, but individual identities will not be revealed through such statistical reports.

From time to time, we may also contract with parties outside our affiliated group so we can make available certain financial and other consumer products and services to our current and former customers. For example, we may enter into joint marketing agreements with financial institutions, like banks, lending companies, tax return preparers or processors, or money transfer providers to make available the various financial products and services they provide. We may also enter into joint marketing agreements with other types of businesses such as grocery stores and phone companies so they or we can give you information or special offers about the products and services those businesses offer. In those cases, we may disclose to those companies certain types of information we collect about our current and former customers as described in response to the first question above, but we would not share any health or credit information, driving records, social security numbers, bank account, or credit card information.
